4.3.4 CHART II Applications

There are nine CHART II functional applications accessible via the operator interface:

  1. Traffic and Roadway Monitoring
  2. Traffic Management
  3. Traffic Advisories
  4. Incident and Special Event Management
  5. System Management and Monitoring
  6. CHART Network Management and Monitoring
  7. MDSHA Intra-Agency Coordination
  8. MD Inter-Agency Coordination, and
  9. Planning and Research Support.

The above applications will share the same generic business case architecture, illustrated in figure 4-7. That is, applications operate on data objects normalized according to a business model, and present data to the user interface for display. Business model rules are manipulated so that appropriate views of the data are processed.

The system software architecture that will support these functional applications is shown in figure 4-8. Note, all the services (denoted by server) throughout the system are synchronized by the CORBA ORB. External and legacy systems will communicate with CHART II via a database that uses the emerging national ITS standard Traffic Management Data Dictionary (TMDD) schema.

Two services will be unique to the SOC: archive export and web export. In addition, the interface to the Econolite Aries, SSI Weather Source, and Information Exchange Network (IEN) systems will also be unique to the SOC. The interfaces to VDOT will be implemented only at District 3, SOC, MdTA AOC, and MCTMC.

The Field Management Station (FMS) server is shown with a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) interface. The FMS, which provides a distributed communication mechanism for CHART II, is currently being implemented as an SNMP device to take advantage of certain evolving NTCIP protocol definitions that use SNMP as a base. Further detail about the FMS software architecture will be addressed in the following section.
